History of Caribbean Stud Poker
Caribbean stud poker is believed to have been invented sometime in
the 1980's at a casino on the caribbean island of Aruba. From
there, it spread to other caribbean island resorts and hotels and became
know as Caribbean Stud.
Several people claim to have invented this game, most notably David Sklansky, a gambling expert and celebrated author. He claims that he invented the game in 1982 and first called it Casino Poker. The rules were slightly different as there was no progressive jackpot and the dealer showed two cards.
He tried to patent the game, but was not able to because of patent laws back then, but he was able to trademark the game. He never ended up doing anything with the game, but said several years later that he told the rules of the game to a poker player. This poker player knew a casino owner in Aruba which would explain the game's origin.
Online Casinos
In the 1990's, Caribbean Stud Poker became more popular. One of the reasons was that a number of companies, most famously Hoyle games, made a mini casino program that included most varieties of casino games.
Online casinos followed suit in the late 90's by adding Caribbean Stud Poker complete with a progressive jackpot to their list of online games. Today, many of these online casinos have progressive jackpots that are worth well over $100,000.
